SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION OF THE OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE SCHOOLS EXAMINATION BOARD.
The subjects of Examination are arranged in the following Divisions :
Group I.--(a) Scripture Knowledge ; (b) English ; (c) English History ; (d) Geography.
Group II.-(a) Latin ; (b) Greek ; (c) French ; (d) German ; (e) Spanish.
Group III.-(a) Elementary Mathematics ; (b) Additional Mathematics ; (c) Physics (d) Chemistry ; (e) Physics-and-Chemistry ; (f) General
Science.
A candidate who takes III (e) or III (f) may not take III (c) or III (d).
Group IV.-Drawing.
Candidates are required to offer not less than five subjects taken from Groups I, II and III, and in order to obtain a Certificate
must : (a) pass in each of these three Groups separately, and (b) satisfy the Examiners in at least five different subjects.
Group IV is optional, and the excellence of a candidate's work in it does not exempt him from the necessity of reaching a minimum standard in each of the Groups I, II and III. His work in Group IV, however, is considered in conjunction with his work in the other three Groups in estimating his claims to a Certificate.
Candidates who attain a sufficiently high standard in one or more of the subjects comprised in the several Groups are awarded a Pass-with-Credit in each of these subjects.
School Certificates, under certain conditions, give exemption from the following Examinations :
(1) Responsions at Oxford, the Previous Examination at Cambridge and the Matriculation Examinations of London and some other Universities. For Sheffield and other Northern Universities a School Certificate is a pre-condition of Matriculation : it needs to be supplemented by a Higher Certificate, or by the passing of four selected Higher Certificate subjects at Subsidiary Standard.
(2) The Preliminary Examination of the General Council of Medical Education, Incorporated Law Society,' Institute of Civil Engineers, Institute of Chemistry, Institute of Chartered Accountants, Society of Incorporated Accountants and Auditors, Pharmaceutical Society, and most other Professional Bodies.
